How we check the STL is printable

A mesh is printable when its surface is closed: every edge belongs to exactly two triangles, so the slicer can tell inside from outside. We test for that by reading our own output back, counting how many triangles meet along each edge, checking the windings agree, and confirming the enclosed volume comes out positive rather than inside out. The numbers below are what that check reports on a fixed set of sample images, at 100 mm and 3 mm thick.

Run over sixteen pieces of flat artwork — logos, icons and monochrome marks — every one came back with no open edges, no self-touching edges and no reversed triangles.

No open edges on photos either

Six traced photographs, from 150 to 1,439 contours each, also came back closed. Between one and 31 edges per model were points where a ragged outline touches itself, which slicers heal on load.

Sized as asked, sitting on the bed

A logo set to 100 mm at 3 mm thick measures exactly 100 × 100 × 3 mm, 1,260 triangles and 62 KB, with its corner on the origin so it lands flat with nothing to rotate.

Where it stops: the extrusion gives a flat silhouette a thickness, so a photograph of a three dimensional object comes out as its outline in relief, not as the object. For that you want photo to 3D reconstruction.

About formats

JPG (JPEG) is a lossy raster image format standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It compresses photographs by transforming the image into frequency components and discarding the detail the human eye is least likely to notice, which produces small files at the cost of soft artifacts around hard edges and fine text. Quality is adjustable, trading file size against fidelity. JPEG is the most common format for digital photographs, camera output and web imagery, supported natively by every browser, operating system and editor. Because it is built for continuous tone photos rather than flat line art, a JPG often carries compression noise that can blur outlines. For the cleanest trace, start from a high quality, high contrast JPG with crisp, well defined edges.

Why convert a JPEG to STL?

A printer needs a solid, and a picture has no thickness. Converting your JPEG traces the outlines in it and extrudes them into a closed mesh, which is what a slicer can turn into layers. It is how a logo becomes a keyring, a stencil becomes a spray mask and a flat silhouette becomes something you can hold.

What software opens an STL file?

Every slicer, which is what matters: Cura, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, Simplify3D and the software that shipped with your printer all open STL and will slice it as it comes. If you want to change the model first rather than print it, Blender, Fusion, FreeCAD, Tinkercad, Meshmixer and Windows 3D Builder all import it too.

Does the converter trace the image?

Yes. It finds the edges in your JPEG and traces them into closed contours, works out which of them are outlines and which are holes, then extrudes the result to the thickness you set. What you get is the silhouette made solid, not a reconstruction: the model is as deep as you asked everywhere, so a photograph of a three dimensional object gives you its outline in relief rather than the object itself.

Is JPEG to STL conversion free?

Yes, and there is no watermark. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your file is never uploaded; a free account is needed only to download the finished file.

Can I get a DXF instead of an STL?

Yes, and it comes from the same trace. The STL is the shape given a thickness so a printer can build it; the DXF is the same outline left flat, which is what a laser, plasma table or CNC router wants, and what you would open if you meant to keep editing the geometry in CAD. Take the STL to print it, the DXF to cut it. Both are written in your browser, so nothing is uploaded either way.

What JPEG files work best?

Flat, high contrast artwork with clean outlines: logos, monograms, stencils, silhouettes, icons and simple line shapes. Those extrude into tidy solids on the first try. Busy photographs with shadows and gradients trace into hundreds of ragged specks, which still prints but rarely into anything you wanted. If the trace preview looks noisy, raise Smoothing until only the shapes you care about are left.

What size will the model be?

Whatever you set. An STL carries no units of its own, so every slicer simply reads the numbers as millimetres, which is why the size has to be decided here rather than later. Set the longest side and the other follows the shape, then set the thickness for how far it stands off the bed. The model is written sitting on z = 0 in the positive corner, so it lands flat on the plate with no rotating or dropping needed.

Will the STL be watertight?

Yes. The mesh is built so that every edge is shared by exactly two triangles, which is the property a slicer needs in order to know what is inside the solid and what is outside. Clean artwork comes out closed and ready to slice. A traced photograph can leave the odd point where the shape touches itself, which slicers repair on load, and the surface is still closed either way.

Can I use the file for laser cutting or CNC?

Take the DXF download for that, not the STL. Lasers, plasma tables, waterjets and CNC routers cut along a flat path, and an STL is a surface made of triangles with no path in it, so most cutting software will not accept one at all. The DXF button hands you the same traced outline as cut paths, at the same size you set for the model.

I have a different image, not a JPEG. Can I still use this?

Yes. The converter accepts any common image, including PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP, HEIC, TIFF and AVIF, whichever page you started from. Just drop your file and it converts.
