About formats

JPG (JPEG) is a lossy raster image format standardised by the Joint Photographic Experts Group in 1992. It compresses photographs by transforming the image into frequency components and discarding the detail the human eye is least likely to notice, which produces small files at the cost of soft artifacts around hard edges and fine text. Quality is adjustable, trading file size against fidelity. JPEG is the most common format for digital photographs, camera output and web imagery, supported natively by every browser, operating system and editor. Because it is built for continuous tone photos rather than flat line art, a JPG often carries compression noise that can blur outlines. For the cleanest trace, start from a high quality, high contrast JPG with crisp, well defined edges.

Why convert a JPG to AutoCAD?

An image is pixels, so AutoCAD can only place it as a raster underlay you cannot snap to, dimension or cut from. Converting your JPG writes the outlines as real DWG polylines instead, which means you can snap to them, edit vertices, put them on layers and send them to a machine.

What software opens a DWG file?

AutoCAD opens the DWG natively, from AutoCAD 2000 onwards including AutoCAD LT and the web and mobile apps. BricsCAD, DraftSight, ZWCAD, Fusion and Revit read it too, and the free Autodesk Viewer opens it in a browser with nothing installed.

Does the converter trace the image?

Yes. It finds the edges in your JPG and traces them into closed vector contours, then writes those as DWG polylines. Because it traces pixels, the output is an outline with no real dimensions or scale, which is perfect for flat cutting but is not a measured engineering drawing.

Is JPG to AutoCAD conversion free?

Yes, and there is no watermark. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your file is never uploaded; a free account is needed only to download the finished file.

Can I get a DXF instead of a DWG?

Yes. The same conversion downloads as either format, and both are written in your browser, so nothing is uploaded either way. DWG is the right pick when you are editing in AutoCAD. DXF is the right pick when the file is leaving your desk, because lasers, plasma tables, waterjets, CNC routers and other CAD programs all read DXF, and some of them will not touch a DWG.

What JPG files work best?

High contrast images with clear outlines give the best DWG: logos, stencils, technical sketches, floor plans and simple shapes. Busy photos with shadows and gradients trace poorly because there is no clean edge to follow.

Can I use the file for laser cutting or CNC?

Yes. The traced polylines drop straight into laser, plasma, waterjet and CNC routing software as cut paths. Set an output width in millimetres before you download so the part comes in at real size. Most cutting software prefers DXF, so take the DXF download if the file is going to a machine.

I have a different image, not a JPG. Can I still use this?

Yes. The converter accepts any common image, including PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP, HEIC, TIFF and AVIF, whichever page you started from. Just drop your file and it converts.
