How do I convert a photo into a technical drawing?

Quick answer

Upload a clear, straight-on photo of the part, let the AI lay out the views and dimension lines, then enter one real measurement to set the scale and confirm the dimensions that matter. A high-contrast photo with the part filling the frame gives the best result.

The four steps

  • Photograph the part. Straight on, filling the frame, with even light and a plain background.
  • Upload it. The AI reads the outline, holes and symmetry and lays out the orthographic views.
  • Set one measurement. Enter the true length of any feature so the whole drawing is scaled correctly.
  • Confirm and export. Check the dimensions that matter, then export to DXF, DWG, SVG or PDF.

What makes a good source photo

The conversion is only as good as the input. Keep the camera parallel to the face you care about, because shooting at an angle bends straight edges and throws off the proportions. High contrast between the part and the background helps the AI find clean outlines.

Why one measurement matters

A photo gives shape, not size. Entering a single measured dimension removes that ambiguity and anchors every other dimension on the sheet. This is the difference between a drawing you can build from and a nice-looking picture. We explain the underlying reason in what a photo can never tell you.
