About formats
IMG is not a file format, it is the shorthand everybody types, and that is worth knowing before you convert one. In practice an "img" is whatever the camera or the phone wrote: most cameras and Android phones name their files IMG_1234.JPG, iPhones write IMG_1234.HEIC, and on the web the word comes from the HTML img tag, which will happily point at a JPG, a PNG, a WebP or an SVG. There is also a genuine .img extension, but it is a raw disk image rather than a picture, and nobody searching for a CAD conversion means that one. So the honest answer is that the file behind the word is almost always a plain raster image: a grid of pixels holding colour values, with no notion of a line, an arc or a contour. Converting it to CAD means tracing the boundaries between light and dark into vector paths, and the extension it happens to carry changes nothing about how well that works. What does change it is the picture itself. Flat, high contrast artwork with clean outlines traces sharply; a busy photo full of shadows and background clutter gives the tracer no single edge to follow.

Why convert an IMG to DWG?
A DWG holds real geometry, which a picture does not. Converting your IMG turns the outlines in it into DWG polylines you can snap to, edit and dimension in AutoCAD, BricsCAD or Fusion, instead of an image you can only trace over by hand.
What software opens a DWG file?
AutoCAD opens DWG natively, and so do BricsCAD, DraftSight, ZWCAD, Fusion, Revit, LibreCAD and the free Autodesk Viewer in a browser. The file is written as AutoCAD 2000 (AC1015), the version every release since reads without complaint.
Does the converter trace the image?
Yes. It finds the edges in your IMG and traces them into closed vector contours, then writes those as DWG polylines. Because it traces pixels, the output is an outline with no real dimensions or scale, which is perfect for flat cutting but is not a measured engineering drawing.
Is IMG to DWG conversion free?

Can I get a DXF instead of a DWG?
Yes. The same conversion downloads as either format, and both are written in your browser, so nothing is uploaded either way. DWG is the right pick when you are editing in AutoCAD. DXF is the right pick when the file is leaving your desk, because lasers, plasma tables, waterjets, CNC routers and other CAD programs all read DXF, and some of them will not touch a DWG.
What IMG files work best?
High contrast images with clear outlines give the best DWG: logos, stencils, technical sketches, floor plans and simple shapes. Busy photos with shadows and gradients trace poorly because there is no clean edge to follow.
Can I use the file for laser cutting or CNC?
Yes. The traced polylines drop straight into laser, plasma, waterjet and CNC routing software as cut paths. Set an output width in millimetres before you download so the part comes in at real size. Most cutting software prefers DXF, so take the DXF download if the file is going to a machine.
I have a different image, not an IMG. Can I still use this?
